Government support for the sector

On 4 May 2020 the government announced its financial support plans for the sector to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. English institutions will be able to recruit 5% more UK and EU undergraduate students than budgeted in 2020/21, with ministers having discretion to allocate a further 10,000 places, with 5000 ringfenced for health-related courses. The OfS is consulting on whether it should be allowed temporary powers to intervene if institutions risk students’ best interests, or the ‘integrity’ of the sector (mainly as a result of their admissions practices); interventions could result in financial penalties.

The Student Loans Company will pay tuition fees for 2020/21 in advance, potentially around £2.6 billion. The government will also immediately bring forward £100 million in research (QR) funding.
