We add value through carrying out bespoke benchmarking exercises across KCG member institutions on subjects that lend themselves to comparative study and which are of interest to members. The results of these reviews, anonymised, are intended to inform the institutions of best practice and to highlight how the institution measures up against what we have seen elsewhere. The reviews recently carried out include:

  • Strategic Risk Registers, comparisons of risks recognised in institutions' risk registers - the number of high-level key risks, the nature of the risk and the mitigating actions.
  • Whistleblowing - compliance with the Public Interest Disclosure Act and related policies and processes.
  • Prevent duty – identifying common good practices and where we have routinely seen deficiencies in approach.
  • Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) – as students are now recognised as consumers of the education service they receive; it is essential that an institution’s approach to ‘advertising’ what it offers is robust and complies with the CMA guidelines. We have reported on common good practice and where they fall significantly short of expectations.
  • Complaints procedures – institutions are required to have effective student complaints processes that meet student needs and our work at member broadly concluded that this objective is being achieved, with a great deal of commonality identified and few areas where significant improvements were required.
Adding value to institutional initiatives and projects
  • KCG has extensive experience in auditing and advising our member institutions’ major projects. These include both real-time audit of IT and other projects, as well as post-project review audits, focusing on benefits realisation and lessons learned to inform future developments (as highlighted in a previous section)
  • In relation to IT projects, such as new student records systems, finance and HR/ payroll systems, this includes attendance at project boards/ steering groups; delivery of IT gateway reviews; and assessment of data migration plans, user acceptance testing/ sign off protocols prior to go-live.
  • For other developments, we have provided guidance during the delivery of major estates projects in relation to project management methodologies, financial control and procurement; reviewed business planning for new collaborations; and considered benefits realised in respect of major institutional restructures.
